If you are playing Starcraft 2 and your race of choice is the Protoss, no doubt you have heard that there are some Protoss build orders which are simply superior to the rest. These builds really help you take out the competition quickly and easily.
Perhaps the most infamous Protoss build order is known as the 4 Warp Gate build, or “4-Gate” for short. This build involves getting out Warp Gate technology as fast as possible, building up your technology, and then quickly adding on 3 more Gateways in order to coincide with the completion of Warp Gate technology.
You simply hold your base with a single Gateway until your Warp Gates are completed, at which point you can start warping in units to take out the enemy. It is a pretty simple procedure and is something everyone can do with enough practice.
In fact, this Protoss build order is so simple and effective that I would say about 50% of players go for this build every single time they play a match as Protoss. It is really quite strong and every patch that has come out has slightly chipped away at its effectiveness.
Another popular build order is known as the 3-Gate Fast Expand. It is sort of the anti-thesis of the 4-Gate in that instead of going for early pressure, you are instead opting to build up your economy. You open in much the same way as you would with a 4-Gate, but you get out only 3 Gateways and build mostly Sentries instead of Stalkers. You can use this extra money to lay down a quick Nexus and protect it with your 5 Sentries.
This allows you to safely grab an expansion and gives you just enough units to defend your base. It also does not put you far behind someone who went for a very early expansion as you can put out some pressure against someone who goes for that build, especially against Zerg players.
