In SWTOR, players will not play in typical worlds experience in other MMORPGs. Instead, they will play on planets. In this SWTOR guide, you will discover what these planets are, exactly how they work, and how they will influence your gameplay.

In other games, the world is split up into a variety of zones. “Zones” were given their name because they are typically geographically distinct areas which are completely different from other portions of the game. Originally, when you entered a new zone, you encountered a loading screen. However, World of Warcraft really pioneered a zoneless system, which allows players to enter a lot of different areas of the game without a loading screen.

However, zones still feel kind of funny, because it makes no sense to walk one minute from a lush jungle area and be no more than a football field’s length from a bone-dry desert. This simply is not logical and doesn’t feel right.

The planets system of Star Wars The Old Republic really helps account for this. It does this by actually separating zones on different planets. Naturally, different planets have different climates, political sects, monsters, and the like.

The real treat about having a planets system is that it allows for the world to be much larger and gives open space for players to explore. For example, some planets can be as big as several zones in other games, and there are dozens of planets. It also makes it easier for new expansions and content patches to contribute to game development, as you can simply add a new planet with an entire new story every time you want to add something new to the game.

With big planets, you can have a central questing area, and then hide things “off the beaten path” such as the holocrons. There are holocrons around these worlds hidden in the most remote areas which will give your character stat bonuses and make them more powerful.

There are even planets which will be designated for PvP so players have a specific area to go to in order to battle over world objectives and see what they can do to fight for their team and earn rewards.

By understanding the planets system mentioned in this SWTOR guide, you now should have a good idea why so many players are excited about the new planets system and about Star Wars The Old Republic as a whole.
